How can I be sure that SP Law Solicitors are qualified to help me?
All solicitors in private practice must hold a practising certificate issued by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, the independent regulator (set up by the Law Society) which sets the rules that all solicitors must follow. This guarantees that the solicitor is qualified to practice and has insurance to protect you if anything goes wrong.
At SP Law, each of our Solicitors holds a practising certificate. All certificates are on display in our reception area. Alternatively, you may wish to phone the Solicitors Regulation Authority on 0870 606 2555 to check.
Where are SP Law Solicitors based?
Where a firm is based is obviously an issue of convenience, particularly for elderly, sick or disabled people.
SP Law Solicitors are located at 133 Stimpson Avenue, Abington, Northampton, NN1 4JN, approximately one mile outside the town centre and just off the Wellingborough Road.
The roads immediately adjacent to the firm do not have any parking restrictions or pay meters. You can therefore park right outside the office and for free.
However, if you find travelling difficult, our solicitors are happy to visit you at home.
Will SP Law Solicitors be sympathetic?
If you need to consult a solicitor about a personal matter, such as a relationship breakdown, our solicitors will try their best to make you feel comfortable. Our solicitors will be sympathetic and understanding if you are distressed. You may prefer to deal with someone who is the same sex as you. Don't be afraid to say that this is what you want.
Will SP Law's Solicitors speak my language?
If English is not your first language, you should mention this to us. SP Law can give you advice in Gujarati, Urdu/Hindi and Punjabi. Alternatively, if you tell us in good time, we can arrange for an interpreter to be present at your meetings.
Preparing for the meeting
Making an appointment
Please telephone us on 01604 638 905 in order to arrange an appointment. Let us know if there is anyone who you need to bring to the meeting with you. You should also make available all relevant documents, including proof of identity.
Be prepared
The more preparation you do before the meeting, the more you'll get out of it. Make a list of the main points you want to make or the questions you want to ask. Get together any paperwork that is relevant and put it in some kind of order so you can refer to it quickly. This will make it quicker and easier for one of our solicitors to understand your circumstances and give you proper advice.
SP Law Solicitor's charges
Legal advice, like anything else you buy, costs money, but its value can be enormous. Charges vary between solicitors, and will depend on the expertise and experience of one of our solicitors as well as how complicated the work is.
SP Law Solicitors offer fixed fees wherever possible to ensure that you have absolute certainty in respect of charges.
Where we don't charge a fixed fee for a particular job, the bill will be worked out on an hourly basis. So the longer it takes the more it costs. Our solicitors will give you a cost estimate at the outset, usually at the first interview.
If an hourly rate is quoted, we will agree a fixed spending limit with you. If the costs look likely to go over your limit, we will contact you and get your agreement to continue.
However price is not the only thing you have to consider. Above all, we will try our best to make you feel comfortable and give you advice that you can understand.
Do SP Law Solicitors work on a conditional fee basis?
For certain types of case, including personal injury, solicitors at SP Law may be prepared to work on a conditional fee basis. This is more commonly known as a ‘no win, no fee’ arrangement. If you win the case, your solicitor's fees will usually be paid by the other side. If you lose, you do not have to pay your solicitor's fees. You may be asked to take out an insurance policy to pay the other sides costs if you lose.
Do SP Law Solicitors do legal aid work?
If you are on a low income or receiving benefits, you may be eligible for legal aid. Legal aid is managed by the Legal Services Commission. You can find this out by contacting your nearest citizens' advice bureau or law centre.
SP Law do not do legal aid work. You can find solicitors that do legal aid work on the Legal Services Commission website at www.legalservices.gov.uk.
Do SP Law Solicitors have a complaints procedure?
